We love knitwear! Soft, comfortable, and ultra-stylish, it envelops us from the first chill of autumn. But whether it's made of cashmere, mohair, alpaca, or merino wool, it's essential to care for it in a way that matches its quality. First and foremost, carefully read the instructions on the inside of your garment. It provides valuable information on the best way to wash and care for your piece. Each material has its own specific characteristics, and following these instructions is the first step to avoiding care mistakes. Here are our tips for optimal care of your knitwear.

1.        Hand wash to preserve the quality of your pieces

Hand washing remains the safest method for caring for your knitwear, especially for fine materials like cashmere or merino wool. Use lukewarm water (around 20-30°C) and a mild detergent specially designed for delicate fabrics. Soak your garment for a few minutes, then rinse it in cold water without rubbing or wringing. Also remember to sort your colors , washing light shades separately from darker ones, to avoid any discoloration.

Trick : For items that allow it, if you opt for machine washing, choose a special "wool" or "delicate" program, cold and without spinning. Always use a suitable detergent and avoid overloading the machine to avoid damaging the delicate fibers through excessive friction.

2.        Spin-drying and drying: avoid deformation

After washing, it's crucial to handle your knitwear with care. Never twist your sweaters or cardigans to wring them out, as this can cause them to lose their shape. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water with a terry towel. Then, let your garment dry flat on a flat surface, away from direct light and heat sources. This helps prevent the fibers from stretching or becoming brittle.

Attention : Avoid using a hanger to dry your knits. The shoulders could stretch and lose their original shape. Drying flat remains the best option to ensure good hold over time.

3.        Storage: fold rather than hang

Once your knitwear is dry, store it flat in drawers or on shelves. Hangers should be avoided for these pieces, even for short periods, as they can alter the garment's shape. To protect your most fragile pieces, you can place tissue paper between them. Additional tip: To prevent moths, place lavender sachets or cedar blocks in your wardrobe. This will protect your knitwear while leaving a pleasant scent.

4.        Fiber care: remove lint and carefully smooth out wrinkles

Over time and through natural wear and tear, it's common to see pilling appear on your knits. Rather than using scissors or pulling at the fibers, invest in a special comb or a pilling razor designed for knits to remove them cleanly.

As for steaming, use a steamer on a low heat setting if necessary. Avoid ironing delicate materials like wool and cashmere, which can burn or deteriorate under excessive heat.

5.        Additional precautions to extend the life of your mesh

To preserve your knitwear over time, try not to wear it too often without letting it "rest" between uses. Washing it too frequently can also weaken the fibers; remember to air it out in the open air between washes to refresh it without damaging it. Finally, to protect your knitwear from stains, especially during meals or drinks, you can use a special waterproofing spray for delicate fabrics. This will create a protective barrier without harming the texture of your garment.
